Block For Marine Son's Quilt

I just finished this block to mail to Dawn. It's a monkey wrench pattern in patriotic colors. I read about her and her son Sterling on our about.com:Quilting forum. She wanted to make a quilt for her son to take with him to Iraq. I couldn't resist sending in a block to be included in his quilt. My brother is a Marine who served in Iraq. I'll drop it in the mail tomorrow.

Here is a close up of the fabric so you can see it has stars on it. They look like polka dots in the first photo.

Here is the original message. I encourage everyone to follow the link and contribute:

Dawn (MilitaryMom) has a 20 year old son, Sterling, who is returning in August to Iraq for his second tour of duty there.

I am quoting Deb in WNY who is quoting Dawn:

"My dream is to make a quilt for him that covers him in loving thoughts and prayers from all over the country. I know that I am not the only mother of a Marine or soldier and I would gladly contribute blocks to anyone else who would like to make a quilt of love. Nights get very cold in Iraq even though the days are 120 degrees plus.

I will never be able to tell you all what this means to me and Sterling will be so very grateful. Thank you all for already having sent emails offering blocks. I plan on making this a tied quilt so that I can get it out to him before he deploys. He will be home for 2 weeks in mid July (we hope) so maybe I can get them all together by then."

Dawn would like 10" blocks (10.5" unfinished), in a patriotic theme with the maker signing it, telling the city, state and date. She didn't give me an exact date when she would like the blocks to her, but if she is to complete the quilt by mid July, it needs to be pretty soon.

I think this is a great thing for us to be doing, a quilt block is nothing compared to what these men and women are doing for us.

God Bless Our Troops!!

30's WOW 4 Patch Blocks

I've finished my 30's white on white 4 patch blocks for the swap I joined. I'm mailing them off to Deb in WNY on Monday. This is the first swap I've ever joined so I'm excited to see what I'll get back at the end of the month. I joined two other swaps (brights on black 2.5" noodles and blue and WOW HSTs) to keep me busy till the 30's 4 patches arrive.

Here is a photo of the fabrics I picked out.

Here is a photo of my finished blocks all ready to mail to Deb.

I made a funny mistake when starting this whole project. I skimmed through the directions and committed to 8 sets, thinking that I would make 16 blocks total (8 sets of 2 blocks) with 8 different 30's repro fabrics. I'm glad I asked a question on the forum about the fabrics, because Deb informed me I signed up for 8 sets of 16 BLOCKS. YIKES!! It's a good thing 4 patches go FAST!

Look What I Just Scarfed Up...

Lookie what I just scarfed up from my new favorite etsy shop! I asked her to make it in shades of blue to match my sewing room. THANKS JEN at Schmaltzy Craftsy!!
