Family Excitment | A Broken Collar Bone

Greetings Everyone - It's been VERY hectic in the Walsh household over the last week. Our youngest, Brennan (6 months) rolled off his changing table while mom was diapering him on Wednesday night. The little daredevil has been really active over the last month trying to crawl and wanting to be mobile like his big brother Rowan.

Mandy had him on the changing table after dinner. She looked away to get a clean diaper above the table and in seconds he was on the floor. The poor guy seemed fine when we checked his reflexes and alertness. He was consolable, nursed fine and there was no bruising. His room is carpeted with a thick pad underneath. He woke up several times after putting him to bed an hour later so we called the doctor to explain what happened. He told us to go to the ER and have an x-ray. The PA diagnosed a broken collar bone. They just let them heal naturally with no medical intervention. 4 weeeks is the healing time. Poor little guy. Brennan is home and fine with mom who has been beating herself up over this. I told her it was an accident and these things happen all the time. They both are better today.

We have a follow-up appointment with an orthopedist today and will update everyone.

  1. Tell her not to worry. Gemma rolled off our bed when she was Brennan's age. The doctor told me that nearly every kid has a fall at one stage or another. At that age they tend to bounce and not do too much damage.
Apart from an obsessive love of cars there's been no after effects.LOL

    Love and hugs Gina xxx

  2. Poor MOM, I know that freaked her out. Brennan will be okay, although I am sure it isn't fun for him right now.
I hope Dad is holding up okay too.

  3. Oh no, poor baby - and poor Mom!! I can only imagine how bad she must feel even though she knows that it was an accident.

  4. Poor thing - both Brennan AND Mom. We all have stories like that so tell her that is part of Motherhood. It would be a bad sign is she didn't feel terrible.

We've had two broken scapulas in our family of boys and they always let them heal on their own. Good luck with a 6 month old. At least when they're older they can understand the reason for the pain.

  5. Sorry to hear this as I know mom and dad are feeling really bad and the little guy is hurting. Hopefully, he might heal faster than they say. Accidents do happen....so mom shouldn't be beating herself up about it.

  6. Oh, poor baby- I hope he heals quickly! And poor Mom... it was an accident, and he'll heal! Don't beat yourself up about it! I'm sure there's not one person on earth that wasn't dropped at least once as an baby- infants are so darn wiggly!

  7. If I had $5 for every time I feel as a child and broke a bone or cracked my head open I could retire. I have plenty of scars on my head to prove it and I turned out okay, at least thats what the voices in my head tell me... Tell mom not to worry, and the lil' one will heal before she knows it.

  8. My daughter rolled off our tall bed at your son's age. I understand the guilt she feels. No worries, be happy :o)

  11. Tell your wife it happens to the best of us. I was three steps from my daughter when she fell off the monkey bars and broke her left arm above and below her elbow. ANd six months later, I was right behind her when she shut her ring finger, same arm, in the car door and busted it. You just can't save them always. Don't let her beat herself up too long. We have to be talked out of guilt trips or we will wallow in them forever.

  12. My son broke his collar bone playing hockey when he was 8 years old, it's a lot easier to do than you would think. The bright side was, as long as he didn't try to lift his arm, it didn't hurt at all.
Your son will be fine, tell Mom not to beat herself up.

  13. I know how hard it is for her to think she hurt her baby--but he won't remember it and in time it will be a family story! Tell her not to beat herself up!!

  14. Tell mum not to worry too much as babies at this age recover very quickly and accidents do happen no matter how vigilant you are.Hope Brennan and mum are feeling much better today :) Barb.

  18. Poor little guy and also poor Mommy! They do heal nicely...our son was 9 yrs old and watching his 15 mo. old sister for us as we finished getting ready to go away. She rolled off of the couch onto the floor and broke her collar bone. She healed nicely...just fussy for a few days.

  19. Tell her that these things do happen. I can remember one time when my son fell off the sliding board and I blamed myslef, but really these things do happen to kids.

  21. Yikes! I am cringing from all the way over here but know how easily that sort of thing can happen. Our Easter was spent at the hospital after our 18 month old got her finger stuck between the bicycle cog and the rotating chain. Actually, I think I'll stop typing now. Six months on and still have my heart in my mouth thinking about that one...!

  22. Ryan,
Your poor wife and little one- babies are so quick sometimes. It could happen to anyone of us-
I always hated when my son got hurt or was ill- it was way harder than feeling that way myself.
Wishing you all a speedy recovery.
    Warmest regards,
    Anna

  26. sorry to hear about the fall ... but babies are so resilient -- as long as the doctor gave his a-ok, i am sure he will be fine!

(amazing, isn't it? you can't take your eyes off them for A SECOND!!)

hope all is well otherwise. how's your schnibbles coming? i stayed up late tonight (1AM!) to finish. i think i'm a little bit crazy.

  27. See? A parent really has to watch the eyes that see all those Super Hero movies, till they are at least, uh... 18 months and can fly with a little more care! :) We allowed no capes in our family till they got their licenses!

  30. Been there, done that ... twice with one kid. Yup, Nature Boy fell off the couch onto the hardwood floor in early July and we had it confirmed by xray. The second time, probably a couple months later, he fell down some carpeted stairs... didn't even bother to go to the ER. He now has matching bumps (not really visible) on his shoulders. BOYS! BTW he has also had a couple sets of stitches (he is 13 now) and a broke wrist! watch out!
