Welcome everyone to another edition of our AccuQuilt GO! {Quick Cuts}. The entries have been steadily coming in (1,227 strong thankyouverymuch!) and so have the questions (???!?!??). Everyone wants to know why they should have a GO!
So ... without further ado, this edition of {Quick Cuts} will be dedicated to some of those burning questions.
Why do I want a strip cutter? Is it really a time saver once you've loaded, aligned and run your fabric through? Isn't a rotary cutter and a ruler just as quick and accurate?
What a great question! I can talk from experience on this one. Have you ever cut multiple strips for sashing/binding only to discover after the first few cuts the strips have a terrible V shape in the center? I have! And it gets me soooo mad (Aaarrggghh)! Ruler slippage, fabric stretching, you name it all work against you when cutting strips in a flat surface with your rotary cutter. I find it takes you longer to stop every few cuts and square up the fabric than using my GO! strip cutter to make the strips. You get less fabric waste since you don't have to square up AND you can accurately cut up to 6 layers with each pass through the machine. Try cutting 6 layers of fabric with a rotary cutter, my friend!
What types of fabric can I cut with the GO!?
I went straight to the AccuQuilt website for this answer ... You can cut all types of fabrics including cotton, batik, flannel, fleece, wool and denim although the number of layers of each fabric you can cut is determined by its thickness and type. Always start with fewer layers and build up. You can also cut paper with your dies but AccuQuilt recommends keeping it to a minimum amount because your die will dull just like your favorite pair of fabric scissors do.
I'm looking for a portable cutting solution and one that I can use to teach quilting to kids and mildly handicapped adults. Is the GO! a good option for me?
YES!! This machine is a great option of you want to teach quilting to young people or people with special needs. I find rotary cutting is one of the most dangerous aspects of quilting. Those blades are sharp (ask me how I know)! The GO! allows you to safely teach fabric cutting and quilting without worry of injury. The die blades are securely hidden in a layer of foam to prevent them from cutting anything but your fabric. And at only a little over 15 lbs. it wont take a lot of heft on your part to move your GO! around. My son loves to help me crank fabric through the GO!
How long do the GO! dies last? $30 seems a lot to spend on a Die for one shape...
Have you ever paid a premium for kitchen pans or cutlery? Specialized tools cost a lot to develop and make. AccuQuilt promises us that if maintained properly your dies will last you hundreds of cuts and many years. You can use one die for many different projects. I think I recently paid $20 for a 5 pack of rotary cutter blades (and that was on SALE!!) only to discover I had to either sharpen them or replace them after a few dozen or so long cuts. That adds up fast.
To illustrate the secod part of that question, here is another wonderful video from the AccuQuilt YouTube Library. I bet you thought you could only use your strip cutter to make strips. Did you know you can cut squares and diamonds with it too????
And YES the folks at AccuQuilt have a GREAT sense of humor as evident in the first part of this video!!

The strip cutters ssave me MAJOR time. Plus you can cut squares with them too. I love tools that do double duty.
Are the rest of us (i.e. those that already have a go) eligible to win the fabric? It looks yummy.

Gotta love that new fandango! And I still want a GO so bad!
you are doing a good job showing off the GO. I even took time to watch the videos! adding to my Seriously Think About It List.- thanks for sharing- cw
Sweet fabric, and the quick cuts is cool too!
Great answers to help us in knowing more about the cutter. I do hate cutting strips for my bindings and I do go through a lot of rotary blades, and they are not cheap.
