Cherry Fizz by Barbara Jones

Quilt Soup Logo

After a brief hiatus, it’s FINALLY time for another edition of Fat Quarter Shop Friday! Hip, hip, hooray! Did you miss me? :)

Today we’re talking with Barbara Jones of Quilt Soup about her newest release from Henry Glass Fabrics, Cherry Fizz. Bringing together the best of retro and modern, this new collection is bright, cherry and adorable. All GOOD THINGS in RWQ standards. I had so much fun going through all the prints in the fat quarter bundle and preview images Barbara sent me.

I even managed to do a mini photo shoot in the studio. I’ll share those photos a little later in the post … Just look at the gorgeous colors in this line!

Hi Barbara! Thanks for being here today to share your new fabric release with us.

RWQ: I just love your fabric designs and am excited to talk with you. I’m a big fan of your brand and always look forward to your fabric lines.

Please tell our readers how long you’ve been designing fabric.

About 5 years.

RWQ: What is your design background?

Trial and error, but I definitely know what I like!

RWQ: Ha ha, that’s definitely one of the best methods to accomplish something in my book. Just have at it and see where it takes you. I’d love to know where you draw your inspiration from when designing.

People, places and things that I have experienced.

RWQ: So, you pull from reality then. Is there anything you want to tell my readers about your inspiration for Cherry Fizz?

The Cherry Fizz line was based on a place we used to go when I was a girl. Back then, we didn’t have central air conditioning at home. When it got really hot in the summertime, my mother didn’t want to heat up the house by cooking, so sometimes we would go out for a hamburger for supper. I live in Utah where we have mountains and, therefore, lots of canyons. It is always cooler in the mountains.

We used to go for a drive up the canyon to a little roadside stand called “The Oaks”. They offered sodas in glass bottles and the caps were lined with cork. They also offered hamburgers and hot dogs. You could enjoy your choices at a picnic table set underneath the oak trees outside of the food stand.

RWQ: Oh wow, so we actually have a small glimpse into you childhood when we look at this line. How nostalgic.

For our readers that might not be familiar with your work, is this your first design to be licensed on fabric?

No, this is our seventh line to be released.

A picture is worth a thousand words I think! You can see all my designs on the on the Henry Glass website here.

RWQ: Do you have a favorite print in the Cherry Fizz collection?

No, I love them all.

RWQ: I’m definitely with you there. This entire line is a must have for any quilter’s stash. Are you a quilter?

Absolutely and for 25 years or so!

RWQ: I guess you can teach us all a thing or two then. How would you describe your brand’s quilting “style”?

We are a company that specializes in needleturn applique for beginners. Most of our patterns feature applique that is large and do-able. We want our customers to succeed. We also hope our designs are fresh! They are all original.

RWQ: It’s good to know your patterns are beginner friendly. I think needle turn applique is scary to some. Thanks for showing us that it can be fun and simple!

Do you have any other hobbies besides quilting?

I knit, crochet, embroider and do stained glass and have worked in a variety of mediums. If it is crafty, I have probably tried it, with the exception of scrapbooking!

RWQ: I always have a hard time coming up with the names for my patterns. How do you pick the names for your fabrics?

I usually just name the collection based on the story it is designed around. Usually, I have a name for each pattern in the line in my head as I am working on the line.

For example, in the Cherry Fizz line I have black, red and yellow bottlecap prints.

RWQ: Thanks again for being here today Barbara! I really enjoyed our visit.

How can my readers find more information about you and your company?

By visiting our website, www.quiltsoup.com or checking our blog from time to time www.quiltsoupblog.com.
